TransTint is a concentrated liquid dye for coloring bare wood or tinting a finish, sold here in 2 oz bottles. It comes in 19 base colors — ten wood tones and nine accent colors — that intermix to build custom shades, and it's fully dissolved rather than powdered, so there's no sediment to stir up before use.
A starting mix is about 2 oz of concentrate per half-gallon of solvent, adjusted up or down to taste. Cut it with water for an economical, non-flammable stain, or with denatured alcohol for a fast-drying dye that doesn't raise the grain (pre-raise the grain with an abrasive pad first if you go the water route). The same concentrate works as a finish toner — add up to about 1 oz per quart of shellac, lacquer, water-based topcoat, or catalyzed varnish to shift its color without building extra film. Apply by brush, rag, spray gun, or sponge. For interior wood only.
